Abstract     Anemia is a common and prognostically unfavourable feature of heart failure. Anemia may be due to hear failure itself (hemodilution, neurohumoral activity, inflammation, renal insufficiency, dysfunctional eritropoiesis) or secondary to comorbitities (e.g. occult gastrointestinal bleeding or malnutrition). Recent trials have shown that therapy of anemia <i.e. with human recombinant eritropoietin) improves left ventricular function and quality of life, and decreases hospitalizations and mortality. However, there is only a limited number of methodologically weak trials that do not allow us to make evidence-based conclusions. Current guidelines therefore reccommend secondary <reversible) causes of anemia be excluded and each patient be managed individually.
