Abstract     Assays for platelet function monitor the response of platelets to an agonist or biochemical changes which occur when they are activated. Bleeding time and its modifications, closure time I'FA-100 analyser and platelet agregation studies are in the first group of tests. Biochemical changes upon platelet activation can be measured in different ways, e.g. using monoclonal antibodies and ELISA or flow cytometry. Changes in platelet biochemistry are not necessarily reflected in changes in platelet function. Research is in progress to find the best method for monitoring the safety and efficacy of antibodies and drugs which interfere with GP IIb/IIIa.
