Abstract | The article reviews new guidelines for the resuscitation of adults. In new guidelines emphasis is placed on provision of effective chest compressions and decompressions. Interruptions of chest compression shoud be minimal. The ratio of compressions to ventilation is universal 30:2. Initial 2 rescue breaths are omitted. Delays in defibrillation shoud be minimized. In cardiac arrest lasting more than 5 minutes 5 cycles at 30:2 are given before defibrillation. Defibrillation is attempted with a single shock. Biphasic defibrillator technology is superior to monophasic. Intubation, ventilation (exception: primary respiratory arrest) and drug therapy are not so crucial as effective chest compressions. The importance of continous education is emphasized. | |
