Abstract     Beside routine supportive care the gastrointestinal decontamination is frequently the only treatment available in the orally poisoned patient. Efficacy of different elimination methods has not been proven sufficiently in spite of several studies. Primary elimination methods are: emesis, gastric lavage, administration of activated charcoal, use of cathartics, whole-howel irrigation and dilution in cases of corrosive ingestion. The physician has to identify patients, who ingested a potentially life-threatening amount of a poison, and in whom the benefits of gut decontamination outweigh its potential risks; the general consensus being that gut decontamination is most effective in the first hour after poison ingestion. Elimination procedures should not be undertaken indifferently. The decision about the necessity and the type of gut decontamination method has to rely on estimation of poisoning seriousness, time of ingestion, estimation of poison toxicity with the help of Poison Control Center and possibility of safe decontamination procedure. We must be aware of the fact that poisoning cases are often unique in at least some of its determining factors.
