Abstract     Sleep disorders are common among the elderly. Sleep disturbances may partly result from the normal aging process per se or are the consequence of different medical problems frequently present in the elderly. Sleep changes and circadian rhythm disturbances are often present in the patients with dementia. In the elderly, different dyssomnias like obstructive and central apnea syndrome, restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder are frequent. Dealing with sleep disorders in the elderly should consist of an exhaustive interview and a clinical examination (internal, neurological and ear-nose-throat examination). It is important to search for primary sleep disturbances. Only an exact clinical definition of sleep disturbances can lead to the right choice of further diagnostic procedures and appropriate treatment.
