Abstract     The development of cancer is due to the presence of carcinogenic substances and the lack of protective substances. Although nutrition is directly and indirectly linked to the development by numerous cancerous diseases, it is commonly considered in cancer of digestive system (oesophagus, stomach, especially colon/rectum); upper respiratory tract (mouth, throat), is related to over consumprion of alcohol; and some hormone related cancer (breast, prostate, pancreas). The type of nutrients, quantity and frequency of intake are important determinants of cancer initiation, and promotion. Besides nutrients and energy density, important risk factors for cancer are also food additives and contaminants. Some results of epidemiological and animal studies about the role of nutritional factors in the prevention and/or promoting effects on related cancers are presented.
