Abstract | The role of vitamins (antioxidants) on prevention of oxidative cellular damage and oxidative stress is presented. The accumulation of oxidative damages can lead to many diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases and aging process. The outcomes of many scientific papers promote the use of antioxidant supplements in order to prevent intracellular oxidation formation and lowering of oxidative stress. However, more recently published studies point out the harmful prooxidative properties of antioxidants, both in viho and in vivo. Antioxidants are capable to autooxidize and due to their ability to reduce redox active metal ions from Mn+1 to Mn form, hydroxil radical is produced in Fenton reaction. Due Yo this fact the question of safety of antioxidant supplements in cancer prevention and cure, rises. | |
