Abstract     Optimal nutrition of preterm infant is an important tool in neonatal intensive medicine. Early growth deficits have long-term adverse effect not only on stature but also on neurodevelopmental outcome. The potential route of feeding is especially important for survival of most premature babies with very low and extremely low birth weight. Equally important is early initiation of enteral feedings in sub nutritional, trophic quantities, which promotes maturation of gastrointestinal tract. Preterm breast milk expressed from the infants own mother is the milk of choice. Supplementation with a human milk fortifier is necessary to optimize nutritional intake. When human milk is not available, preterm formulas are appropriate substitute. Follow up visits for assessment of nutritional status are recommended after discharge.
