Abstract     Labour is a physiologic, psycho-emotional and social event. Nowadays, expectant mothers wish to participate in decision-making regarding the mode of delivery, an elective cesarean on demand included. On the other hand, most mothers wish to have a vaginal delivery, in the management of which they wish to co-decide more or less actively. The common wish of the mother and her partner on the one hand and the medical staff on the other is to create an intimate and warm atmosphere during labour that increases the feeling of safety and satisfaction in all present. The expectations of parents-to-be anti the actual possibilities of a maternity hospital are not always in agreement. However, information provided sufficiently early gives a good chance to narrow this gap to the satisfaction of both parties.
