Abstract     Background. In developed world, congenital and neonatal tuberculosis is not common disease but continues to pose complex challenges to the medicine. Congenital tuberculosis could be acquired transplacentally as prenatal chorioamnionitis, and perirratally through aspiration and ingestion of infected maternal genital tissues and fluid. Neonatal tuberculosis could be acquired postnatally through droplet spread.from cases of active tuberculosis. According to the data from Central Tuberculosis Registry in Slovenia between January 1, 1992 and September 30, 2006 only one newborn infant was detected and successfully treated with therapy for tuberculosis. In the group of infants 0-12 months of age this represents 6,6% (1/15). Conclusions. If diagnosed and treated with antitubercular therapy in its early stage, tuberculosis in newborn infant is a curable disease. Improved screening of pregnant women at high risk for tuberculosis and suspition of tuberculosis in newborn infants who are unressponsive to empirical antibiotics allow successful treatment of the patients.
