Abstract		Background: Myoclonic jerks are complex phenomena, which appear in many physiological and pathological states. Within the syndrome of benign neonatal sleep myoclonus they appear only in sleep in otherwise healthy infants. Conclusions: In order to differentiate from other states in which myoclonic jerks appear and to avoid unnecessary investigations and therapy, it is crucial to recognize the syndrome on clinical grounds.
