Abstract     Background: The incidence of colorectal cancer has been rapidly increasing during the last decades. It represents the third most common cancer in Slovenia. Methods: In 1998, the incidence of colon cancer increased to 31.3 per 100,000 in men and to 25.8 per 100,000 in women, and the incidence of rectal cancer to 23.5 per 100,000 in men and to 13.1 per 100,000 in women. By a national cancer registry, incidence and follow-up are assessed. Results: An insight into the operative treatment of patients with colorectal cancer in Slovenia was gained through surveys conducted in Slovenian hospitals between 1995 and 2000.Conclusions: Nationwide outcomes of treatment remain lower than those in other countries. However, there are centers in Slovenia achieving results in keeping with outcome reported from leading centers in Europe.
