Abstract     BACKGROUND. Recently, developmental defects of enamel (DDE) have become a frequent finding in the permanent dentition. Clinically, these defects involve fairy large whitish-yellow or yellowish-brown demarcated opacities and/or defects. They affect one or more permanent first molars, often in combination witli the incisors. Owing to the hypersensibility, the affected molars present a problem for the patients. Furthermore, as the affected molars are fragile and susceptible to caries, considerable dental treatment is required. The etiology of the DDE is not yet fully understood. There is no generally accepted classification of these defects, thus it is difficult to compare different studies. There is no information on the prevalence and the possible etiological factors of the DDE in Slovenia. AIM AND HYPOTHESIS. Tlie aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and the possible etiological factors for the DDE among children in Ljubljana region. The DDE Index was modified in order to make it suitable for evaluation of the DDE on permanent first molars and to make the results comparable to those of previous studies. METHODS. Tlie study group consisted of 182 pupils from Ljubljana, districts Šiška and Fužine, aged 7 to 10.5. Dental examinations were carried out in a dental chair, using a standard moth mirror and a dental probe. Caries of primary and permanent dentition and the DDE of permanent first molars and incisors were recorded. The new modified DDE Index was used to record the DDE. Parents were asked to fill in a questionnaire on possible etiological factors for the DDE. Using the program package SPSS 9.0 statistical analysis was performed.
