Abstract | Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) affects approximattely 5% of elderly men and is responsible for significant number of deaths in Western countries. In the absence of symptoms related to an aneurysm, the threat that the aneurysm will rupture is the major consideration. Only 10-15% of patients survive the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm; a minority reach the hospital alive, and of these, only about half survive the emergency repair. At present invasive treatment by open surgery or endovascular means is the only used therapy for this condition. In this review the risk factors and treatment strategies for asymptomatic AAA are presented.
Summary | Anevrizma abdominalne aorte (AAA) prizadene okoli 5% starejših moških in je vzrok pomembnega števila smrti v razvitem svetu. AAA so največkrat asimptomatske in največjo skrb povzroča možnost raztrganja anevrizme.
