Abstract     Aim: To investigate the attitudes of GPs and patients towards alcohol drinking in Slovenia and to define the most important barriers and incentives for changing drinking habits. To define the national strategy and public actions to prevent and reduce alcohol related harm, based on the social consensus. Background: Alcohol is an avoidable bad habit that can threaten health. Slovenia takes the second place among European countries regarding the alcohol consumption. The primary care service has un important role in screening and brief intervention (BI) of hazardous and heavy drinkers. GPs in Slovenia have the majority of contacts with the patients in the primary care but they rarely or never ask them about alcohol drinking habits. It is essential to analyse the reasons for such a situation. In Slovenia only a few public campaigns against drinking alcohol are under way. It is important to cstablish which community measures are acceptable to the society in Slovenia in order to reduce alcohol related risks. Methods: We set up six focus groups (patients, GPs and GPs-tutors). With a focus group research, we identified the most important barriers and incentives influencing drinking habits in Slovenia. A Delphi study with 45 professionals of different disciplines was conducted. Participants offered many suggestions to improve the current situation. After three rounds of questionnaires, 86 participant statements were accepted as a consensus. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
