Abstract     There are many factors influencing human health. Beside the inherited ones, social and economical factors are among the most important. Among them, the economic development of the state, measured as gross domestic product, should have a particular influence. The aim of our study was to compare the gross domestic product with health indicators (infant deaths per 1000 live birth, mortality, life expectancy at birth and potential years of life lost) in the EU member states in 2001. For statistical analysis the method of correlation of ranks between the gross domestic product and the above-mentioned health indicators was used. The results show that the mortality of infants and mortality in general is lower in economically more developed societies with higher gross domestic product, while life expectancy at birth in these societies is higher. Although there is a certain correlation between gross domestic product and health indicators, we cannot conclude that high gross domestic product alone ensures good health. It is however a precondition for providing appropriate conditions for better health. And it is the responsibility of the state to provide, within the given financial capabilities, the appropriate systematic economic and social development of the society, and thus to enable the attainment of better health.
