Abstract     Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is a clinicopathological entity characterized by histological spectrum that ranges from steatosis to steatohepatitis, fibrosis and cirrhosis. It is highly recognized condition and is considered the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome. It is commonly characterized by elevated plasma liver enzyme levels and is more common in obese, diabetic and hyperlipemic patients. Liver biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosis. Prognosis is generally good, but occasionally cirrhosis and liver failure developed. No specific pharmacological treatment is available at the moment. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease will probably become the most frequent liver ailment in the next decades.
