Abstract     The response of common buckwheat to the combined effect of UV-B radiation and selenium treatment was studied in outdoor experiments. The flow of electrons in the respiratory chain was measured in young buckwheat plants that were grown from selenium treated seeds. Plants were cultivated under three levels of UV-B radiation; reduced level of UV-B radiation, ambient, and enhanced UV-B radiation that corresponded to a 17% reduction of stratospheric ozone layer. The respiratory potential was lowered in plants grown from seeds treated with selenium, both under ambient and enhanced UV-B radiation.
