Abstract     In Slovenia, colorectal cancer has the highest incidence of all cancers. In about 35% of the cases there is a family history and genetic susceptibility due to undefined genetic pertubations, however the etiology of most cases of colorectal cancer is related to diet and environmental-lifestyle habits. History of disease and clinical examinations are cornerstone of diagnostic procedure. Fecal ocult blood test (FOBT) and colonoscopy are the most important for screening and early detection. Biannual FOBT screening of population reduce the mortality from the disease by 15% to 33%.The patients who have recently undergone colonoscopy are usually not referred to FOBT for at least ten years. The population at risk to develop colorectal cancer is not included the screening program for colorectal cancer because the management of this population follows the recommendations for early cancer detection that are different from those for screening.
