Abstract     Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most frequent cause of congenital infections, affecting 1-2% of all newborn children. Infection by CMV may cause severe sensorineural hearing impairment and mental retardation, especially when primary infection is acquired early in pregnancy. The risk of symptomatic infection in the fetus or newborn is higher when pregnant women is getting over primary CMV infection. Recent reports underscore the importance of secondary infections in which symptomatic children were born inspite of the presence of IgG antibodies to CMV.
