Abstract     We analysed historical and serological data of patients admitted to the Department of Infectious Diseases, Ljubljana, with acute diarrhoic syndrome of known etiology. The goal of our study was to discover possible subclinical courses of Lyme disease and to determine the seroprevalence of borrelian infection in the population of the Ljubljana region. The study involved 45 patients, aged from 15 to 79 years (mean age 39,5 years). On admission, a stool specimen for stool culture and blood for serology were obtained from each patient. History data involving tick bite, bites of other insects, spare time activities, occupation and skin symptoms were collected by a special questionnaire. The patients were divided into four groups on the basis of their serological results. Serological tests were positive in 3145 (6,6 per cent ) of patients; 9/45 (20 per cent ) of them had titres of antiborrelian antibodies higher than, or equal to border values. 4/9 (44,4 per cent ) of patients gave a history of tick bite but none of them reported any skin symptoms. The results indicate that subclinical borrelian infections are rather frequent.
