Abstract     The field of intestinal transplantation is steadily growing thanks to the progress of surgical technicques, more efficient immunosuppressive protocols and improved management of the transplanted patients. One of the major hurdles in small bowel and multivisceral transplantation remains the ability to perform an immune monitoring that could be of assistance in detect occurence of acute cellular rejection (ACR) and/or graft versus host disease (GVHD) early enough to allow for timely immune interventions to prolong graft and patient survival safetly. As small bowel transplantation becomes a more widely utilized clinical tool, there is an increasing need for the development of diagnostic protocols easy to perform that could be of assistance in improving the clinical outcome of this delicate therapeutic approach. We used a preclinical model of allogeneic intestinal transplantation to find out the correlation between skin and intestinal biopsies for the early detection of GVHD and also to find out the role of donor immunocompetent cells in the process of skin histopatology followed intestinal transplantation.
