Abstract     The current generation of children and adolescents grow and develop on predominantly easily digestible food, which is lacking in variety and contains preservatives and additives, and sometimes antibiotics as well. For decades it has been known that certain components of food are essential for the protective functions of the organism against microbes, foreign bodies, parasites and malignant cells. The authors have reviewed the current literature and established some fundamental changes in nutrition, especially in children, but also in older people. The significance of prebiotics and probiotics, zinc, iron and selenium and vitamin A, C and E in children's and adolescents' food must be emphasized, as well as the importance of biologically pure water.
