Abstract     For protection against foreign influences an organism develops two types of defence, congenital and acquired. The mechanisms for congenital resistance to foreign bodies respond immediately and completely, regardless of whether the organism has previously come into contact with the same foreign body or not. The specific immune response is delayed because mechanisms of acquired resistance only form an immune response, which specifically recognizes the molecule of the foreign body, on first contact with the foreign body. The article enumerates the types of immune response that are involved in bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections. Serological investigations, which are often ordered in children with infectious diseases, are described.
