Abstract     In 2004 in Slovenia 38.8% (512,440/1,318,038) children and adolescents aged from 0 to 19 years were seen for a first visit by a doctor because of an infection. In 2005 drugs for systemic treatment of infections comprised 9 % of all prescription drugs in Slovenia. In the last five years, on average, children aged 0 to 14 years were prescribed one drug annually by a doctor, and children aged 1-4 years, 2 drugs annually. The largest number of prescriptions was written in the Maribor region, followed by Ravne and Murska Sobota, and the lowest number in the regions of Kranj and Nova Gorica. The most frequently prescribed antibiotics were broadspectrum penicillins, amoxycillin/clavulanic acid, penicillins with a narrow spectrum and macrolides. In comparison with some developed countries, children in Slovenia are prescribed an antibiotic three times more frequently. The article presents the recommendations for antibiotic treatment of acute respiratory tract infections in children, which are the most frequent reason for prescribing antibiotics in primary care. The authors recommend the delayed method of antibiotic prescribing, in which the child with signs of an infection is observed and an antibiotic prescribed if the clinical state has not improved at the follow-up visit.
