Abstract     Outpatient drug prescribing in paediatrics has some special features with regard to drug treatment in hospitals: speed of decision-making regarding the appropriate medication, lack of direct observation of the effectiveness of the drug, an appropriate form and dosage of the the medication and cooperation of the patient or his parents in taking the medication. There are large differences in drug prescribing between individual regions in Slovenia and also between doctors within the same institution. Good patient follow-up and thorough documentation of prescribed medications are important. The prescribed medication must be written in the medical records in such a way that a replacement or on-call doctor can identify and continue the necessary treatment without difficulty. A universal information system, which would enable patients and their medications to be followed at whatever point they accessed the health system, is lacking. It is easier to present the quantitative consequences of poor compliance than to follow the appropriate indicators of regular and thorough medication taking. It is known that a number of factors influence cooperation in the treatment process, including psychological, social and others. The doctor-patient relationship, and the relationships of all who are involved in the process, are important. In the article views on the acceptability to patients or their parents of instructions given by health personnel, change in behaviour towards their own health, type and form of medication, and acceptability of therapeutic measures, are presented.
