Abstract		Background. In the republic of Slovenia it is necessary to pass a law to lay down a basic programme of preventive dentistry, which would be binding not only for dentists and other doctors but also for educators and teachers. At present, a similar program exists, but it has not been carried out in all parts of Slovenia. The existing programme also conftnes itself to the young population, and excludes the adult and old population. Conclusions. In the Gorica region the initiative was given in 1981, for a basic programme of preventive dentistry, which would be binding for the whole of Slovenia. The programme should lay down when, where, how, by whom and for whom the prevention should be carried out. If the programme is made law, the prevention in dentistry will be unified and the major part of population will be involved in it. Therefore, present amateur prevention will turn into social care for better orofacial health of the population in Slovenia.
