Abstract     Background. The results of the first year of activity of the out-patient department of breast diseases at the Health Center Novo mesto are presented. Methods. The work of this Department is based on the standard diagnostic approach comprising clinical examination and modern low-dose grid mammography using Philip's X-ray machine Mammodiagnost UM with KODAK Min R Fast Screens cassettes and KODAK T Mat 11 films or Trimax FM flms or Konica C films. The quality of these films intended exclusively for mammography is indicated by the respective order, and enables a high degree of resolution. Clinically evident lesions are verified by fine-needle aspiration biopsy. Mammographically detected changes suspicious for breast cancer, which are inaccessible to clinical examination, are localized with hook-wire so as to be surgically removed and histologically analyzed. Results. Breast cancer was detected in 34 (3.56 per cent ) of 953 examined women. Of these, one had non-invasive cancer and another one so called "minimal" invasive cancer with less than 9mm in diameter, whereas the remaining 32 women had advanced breast cancer. Atypical lobular hyperplasia of the breast was established in one case. Conclusions. There vas a relatively high percent of breast cancer found in the region of Lower Carniola. The disease was usually detected in a relatively progressed stage and only in two cases in an early stage. The majority of women who came for an examination complained about pains in their breasts. Only few of them knew how to examine themselves. The results obtained in the research confirm that the Clinic for breast diseases is indeed needed in the region Lower Carniola.
