Abstract     Background. On the not yet well defined area in the commune of črnomelj a pollution with polichlorinated byphenils, probable carcinogens to humans, was observed in the period 1962 -1985. Methods. Therefore cancer incidence in this area compared to the incidence in the whole republic of Slovenia was analysed in the two time periods: 1968 -1977 and 1978 -1987. Results. Crude incidence rate of all cancer sites in males was not statistically significantly different from the Slovene average in both time periods, while cumulative incidence rate was in the first time period even statistically significantly lower. In females, both incidence rates in črnomelj were statistically significantly lower in the first time period. Crude incidence rates that increased steeper and were in 1978 - 87 higher in črnomelj than in Slovenia were in males for liver and stomach cancer and in females for gallbladder, stomach and lung cancer. However, age standardised incidence rates were not statistically significantly different from the Slovene average. Conclusions. The number of new cancer cases in the majority of the analysed cancers in the commune of črnomelj was small despite the rather long period of observation. This analysis can so serve only as a basis for further detailed analytical epidemiological study.
