Abstract     Basic life support refers to maintaining opened airways and supporting breathing and the circulation, without the use of equipment other than a protective device. The last guidelines for resuscitation were published in 2000; since then, science has moved forward and our understanding of evidence has improved. New guidelines for the resuscitation of adults have been published in 2005 in the journal Resuscitation and Circulation. They focus on a »back-to-basis« approach and are easier for laypeople and healthcare professionals to learn. The steps to successful resuscitation are described by the links in the revised chain of survival. In comparison with the 2000 guidelines, the 2005 guidelines recommend giving more chest compressions (30 compressions for every 2 breaths), less breathing and allows laypeople to perform compressiononly-resuscitation if they are unwilling to provide rescue breaths. The ratio 30:2 applies not only to all adults, but also to children. Some modifications in management of choking person are included. Risks to victim and rescuer are reviewed. In-hospital basic life support is beyond the scope of present article. Guidelines for the use of an automated external defibrillator may be found elsewere.
