Abstract     Background. It has been established, that the growth of sensory axons during the innervation of targets in time of embryonic development and during reinnervation of targets after neurotmesis in adult higher vertebrates shows a tendency for segmental selectivity. It is also known, that the collateral sprouting of uninjured nociceptive axons in the skin of adult rats is limited to dermatomes of the belonging segments. Since the axons sprout within preexsisting subepidermal net of neurilemmal tubes of Schwann cells, the incapabilitiy of sprouting axons to grow on growth substratum derived from Schwann cells which belong to different spinal segements (dermatomes) could be the reason for spatial constraint of collatteral sprouting into dermatomes Aim. Our aim was to determine the possible difference in the extent of collateral sprouting of nociceptive axons into neurilemmal tubes of Schwann cells from the same or neighbouring segments. Hypoteses Our hypotheses was: Collateral sprouting of sensory axons is segmental selective, therefore the capability of collateral sprouts of sensory axons to grow within neurilemmal tubes of Schwann cells that belong to axons originating from neighbouring spinal segments than the sprouting ones is diminished.
