Abstract     Background: Secondary caries is characterized as primary caries adjacent to restoration and is the most frequently cited reason for replacement of all types of restorations in general practice although its diagnosis is poorly defined and subjective. Laser fluorescence devices DIAGNOdent (DD) and DIAGNOdent pen (DDP) might be used for its diagnosis. DD has already been found to be superior to visual and radiographic diagnosis of secondary caries. Unfortunately, presence of restoration materials is inherent to diagnosis of secondary caries and their fluorescence might influence the DD and DDP values and could therefore result in false diagnosis. Aim: To evaluate and compare fluorescence of restorative materials and fluorescence changes induced by aging, food staining and bleaching, when measured with DD and DDP. Hypothesis: 1) Material baseline values will differ considerably. 2) Aging and bleaching will not affect baseline values. However, after staining the values will be higher. 3) DDP will give higher fluorescence values than DD. Methods: 360 disks shaped specimens were fabricated from 15 different restorative materials (resin fissure sealants, conventional and flowable resin composites, conventional and resin modified glass ionomers). Specimens were divided into four groups, subjected to bleaching with 10% hydrogen peroxide, bleaching with 10% carbamide peroxide, aging in water and staining with red wine. The specimen fluorescence was measured with DD and DDP before and after the treatment. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
