Abstract     Background: Coating agents are used in industry for improving surface properties of different materials. In this study we evaluated the efficacy of a thin glaze coating in sealing surface pores, reducing surface roughness of dentures and increasing hardness of denture surfaces. Material and methods: Using profilometric and hardness measurements and scanning electron microscopy, the surface texture of 54 specimens of acrylic resin was studied after polishing and application of a glazing agent. Measurements were done on dry and wet specimens. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA and the Scheffe test. Results: The surface roughness of polished acrylic resin specimens was equal to that of specimens treated with the glazing agent. The surface hardness of glazed and dry specimens was significantly greater than that of polished and dry specimens. However, on wet specimens there was no difference in hardness between glazed and polished surfaces. Conclusions: Glazing creates an equally smooth acrylic resin surface as polishing. In wet conditions, glazing does not increase the hardness of acrylic resin surface.
Summary     Izhodišče: V industriji se uporabljajo tanki plastični premazi za izboljšanje površinskih lastnosti različnih materialov. V študiji smo ugotavljali, če lahko s tanko plastjo glazurnega premaza zalijemo pore, zmanjšamo površinsko hrapavost in povečamo trdoto na akrilatni površini zobnih protez. Materiali in metode: S profilometrom, merilnikom trdote in vrstičnim elektronskim mikroskopom smo preiskovali površinske značilnosti 54 akrilatnih vzorcev po poliranju in po nanosu glazurnega premaza. Meritve smo opravili na mokrih in suhih vzorcih. Za statistično analizo smo uporabili analizo variance in Scheffejev test. Rezultati: Hrapavost akrilatnih vzorcev, ki so bili premazani z glazurnim premazom, je bila statistično enaka hrapavosti na površini poliranih vzorcev. Trdota na površini suhih vzorcev je bila statistično večja po nanosu glazurnega premaza kot po poliranju. Na površini vlažnih vzorcev pa se trdota na površini vzorcev, ki so bili polirani, in tisth, ki so bili premazani, ni razlikovala. Zaključki: Glazurni premaz zalije in naredi akrilatno površino podobno gladko kot poliranje. V vlažnih pogojih z glazurnim premazom ne povečamo trdote na površini akrilata.
