Abstract     Acute psychotic disorders are amongst the most dramatic emergency states in clinical medicine thanks to the diversity and intensity of their clinical picture and more so because of the severely disrupted behaviour one can appreciate at an acute psychotic patient. All the above mentioned gives rise in the general population to considerable amount of fear and reluctance towards acute psychotic patients. Typically there is a sudden onset of signs and symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions and disorganised behaviour and speech. In other, non-acute psychotic disorders, the beginning may be less rapid, sometimes without a clear point of onset. The symptoms in an acute psychotic disorder evolve to their full extend within a day, sometimes within some hours or even minutes. There is, nevertheless, no pathognomonic sign or symptom for the diagnosis of an acute psychotic disorder to be made. It is of great importance to recognize and treat eventual organic causes for the development of an acute psychosis for only on hand of the clinical examination it is not possible to exclude them as a cause.
