Abstract     The preventive programme (PP) we apply in the NICU consists of psychologist-guided interview with parents on admission, group team-parents meetings, and early inclusion of the parents in their baby's care. The study group (SG) consisted of 116 mothers and preterm babies, admitted to the Unit within a 6-month period and enrolled in the PP, and the control group (CG) of 74 mothers and their babies not enrolled in the PP. Maternal anxiety and depression were measured on admission and on discharge of their baby from the NICU; 6 months after discharge video recordings of the motherinfant interaction were made. The results show that the PP decreases maternal depression and some signs of anxiety. In the SG the interaction mother-infant after the 6-month period was significantly better than in the CG.
