Abstract     Respiratory failure is a syndrome in which the respiratory system fails in one or both of its gas exchange: oxygenation and carbon dioxide elimination. Futhermore respiratory failure may be acute or chronic. While acute respiratory failure is charasterized by life-threatening derangements in arterial blood gasses and acid-base status, the manifestation of chronic respiratory failure is less dramatic and may be less apparent. This emphasizes the importance of measuring blood gases in all patients with suspected respiratory failure. The first objective in the management of respiratory failure is to prevent tissue hypoxia. Oxygen application is important, but it could even be dangerous if the patient is not controlled. The article presents some rules to be considered regarding oxygen administration.
