Abstract     In the period from 1978 to 1990, 42 patients with neurinoma of the eighth nerve, four patients with bilateral acoustic neurinoma and one patient with evident neurinoma of a single eighth nervce and suspected involvement of the other one were dingnosed at the University Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Cervicofacial Surgery in Ljubljana. The rational diagnostic procedure was introduced on the basis of revious experience. All the patients were operated on at the University Department of Neurosurgery in Ljubljana. Bilateral acoustic neurinomas can be regarded as one of the signs or the only sign of bilateral acoustic neurofibromatosis (BANF). Tlle dominant autosomal manner of disease inheritance was evident in two of our patients, and therefore out multidisciplinary study was extended to include a number of their relatives who were offered genetic counselling.
