Abstract     The purpose of the study was the evaluation of the ovarian response to gonadotropin stimulation with or without simultaneous GnRH analogue administration of the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCO) patients in the IVF-ET programme. In the treated group GnRH analogue Buserelin was adninistered in a daily dose of 500 mcg s.c./day until pituitary desensitization was achieved. A temporary normalization of the LH:FSH ratio was registered in 15.2+-6.3 (mean+SD) days. Afterwards both groups of patients ware treated by the conventional HMG and HCG protocol. Ovulation was stimulated by 17.0+-5.0 ampules of HMG in the treated group and with 14.7+-2.9 ampules in the references group. Comparing the two groups, no statistically significant differences (p 0.05) were found m the number of follicles over 10 mm in diameter on the day of the HCG administration (17.85+-3.31; 19.05+-4.44), in the number ofall aspirated follicles (13.50+-3.38; 13.60+-4.37) or the number of aspirated follicles over 15 mm in diameter (8.70+-3.45; 9.20+-4.48). Considering the results can be concluded that the ovarian response to gonadotropin stimulation in PCO patients remains polycystc despite the GnRH analogue administration, suggesting that the origm of PCO should be sought in the ovary disorder.
