Abstract     From November 1988 to May 1990, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2, Upjohn) was used in 50 patients with the beta HCG value below 2,500 mIU/l for the termination of an early unruptured ectopic pregnancy. Under laparoscopic control 2.25 mg PGE2 (3 ml) diluted with 2-3 ml of physiological salt solution was injected in the tubal wall. The efficacy of the treatment was controlled by serial determinations of the serum beta HCG value. The treatment was successful in 44 (88 per cent ) out of 50 patients and the negative beta HCG value occurred in 8.5+-5.5 days. In 6 patients laparotomy had to be performed due to persisting or even mcreasing beta HCG values. The highest success rate was achieved in the group of patients with the beta HCG value less th. or eq. 1,000 mIU/ml: the higher the beta HCG values, the lower the success rate. According to the location of ectopic pregnancy, the highest success rate was achieved in the patients wiht isthmo-ampullar pregnancy. No complications were observed.
