Abstract | Electroretinograms (ERGs) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) of 10 children with different degrees of optic nerve coloboma are presented. The amplitude of the ERG waves was found to be reduced, and this reduction correlated well with the extent of the retinal changes. The aamplitude of the VEP also depended on the degree of involvement of the optic nerve. The ophthalmoscopic findings, however, did not always correlate with the visual loss. Electrophysiological methods seem to provide substantial aid in the assessment of functional impairment in colobomatous defects. They provide a correct prognosis, before accompanying retinal or cerebral alterations reduce the vision further. | |
