Abstract     The study includes 27 patients with epithelial ovarian carcinoma treated in the Department of Gynaecology at the Maribor Teaching Hospital between 1989 and 1992. All patients were treated surgically, followed by chemotherapy. The course of the disease was folowed by means of the clinical examination, ultrasound, CT and the control of serum tumor markers (CA 125 and ferritin). There were 13 patients with ovarian carcinoma stage I-II and 14 patients stage III-IV, according to FIGO. The control group was formed of 19 patients with benign ovarian tumors and 7 patients with borderline ovarian carcinomas. Preoperative CA 125 values were elevated in 57 per cent patients at the 3rd early stage and in all patients at the late stage of ovarian carcinoma. The tumor markers level depression was greater after radical (62.5 per cent ) than after a nonradical (28.5 per cent ) surgical treatment. A good correlation was found between the stage of the disease and the serum marker level (CA 125 r=0.72; ferritin r=0.75).
