Abstract     Haemoglobin types were investigated in Slovene breeds of sheep using the starch gel electrophoresis. The types of haemoglobin were determined in 1564 sheep od fifferent age and of both sexes, including 387 sheep of the Jezersko-Solčava breed and 202 sheep of Bovec breed. Significant differences among the haemoglobin types were determined among the different breeds of sheep. In autochthtonous Slovene breeds of sheep (Jezersko-Solčava, Bovec) the HbA prevails. It prevails in the Romanovsko breed, too. The HbP prevails in Suffolk, Texel and in hybrids of Jezersko-Solčava and Texel breeds. The great frequency of phenotype HbA and the great frequency of HbA gene in Slovene autochthtonous breeds of sheep shows the possisble advantage of animals with HbA in natura selection. Hybridization of autochthtnous breeds of sheep with imported breeds could change the structure of population regarding haemoglobin genes and therefore their ability for adaptation.
