Abstract     Most antidepressants in use today are derivatives of the monoamine oxidase inhibitor iproniazide and the tricyclic agent imipramine. During the past several decades, approaches were undertaken to clarify the roles of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin in depression. By studying the effects of antidepressant medications on specific neurotransmitters, antidepressant therapies could be matched to treat specific symptoms of depression. Novel research has identified novel potential targets, with the goal of developing new antidepressant drugs with better efficacy and faster onset at action than the currently used gold standard treatments.
Novejše raziskave že prepoznavajo nove potencialne tarče s ciljem razviti nova antidepresivna zdravila z boljšo učinkovitostjo in hitrejšim učinkovanjem, kot ga imajo sedanja zdravila zlatega standarda.
