Abstract     The autopsy samples of vastus lateralis and deltoideus muscles in 10 healthy children, aged 10 to 15 years, who had suffered sudden death were analysed. On muscle samples type I and type II muscle fibres were demonstrated using a combined staining for diaphorase I and myofibrillar adenosinetriphosphatase. A computer assisted method was applied to photographs of cross-sections. Numerical density (NN) areal density (AA) mean diameter (D) index of normalized dispersion as an estimation of distribution of fibre types and spatial arrangement of fibre types in different layers within fascicles were determined. o The numerical density of both fibre types was equal (50 per cent ) in vastus lateralis muscle, in deltoideus muscle type I fibres predominated (58.5 per cent ), but differences were not statistically significant. In both muscles there were no significant differences among the average diameters of both fibre types. There was a preponderance of type II fibres on the periphery beneath the perimisium and of type I fibres in the second layer of a fascicle. In the center of fascicles both fibre types were distributed more homogeneously but there was a slight predominance of type I fibres. The spatial distribution of fibres was a mozaic pattern and similar to normal distribution in adult muscles. We conclude that transformations of fibre types during growth and development are continuous and are not accompanied by changes in distribution of fibre types.
