Abstract     The health status of cattle in the Mežica valley is presented (lead mine and smeltery) for the year 1992, as to haematological (E Ht. Hb, MCV, MCH, MCHC L, and differential blood picture) and biochemical (Pb, Ca, aP, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Ću T. protein, and beta - carotene) profile, parasitological examination and chemical analysis of hay. Examinations encountered twelve sampling farms with 60 dairy cows, which had been through 15 years - before installation of filters - strongly exposed to Pb emission and other noxious substances. The annual level of Pb in cattle blood and Pb and Cd in hay in the period 1975-1992 is presented. The results show that the health status of cattle is adequate and that acute or chronic Pb poisoning is not to be expected. Pb values in blood (0.10 0.07ppm) were within normal limits, while Pb values in hay (14 -I- 8 mg/kg) were still above the upper limit (7 out of 12 samples). Cadmium levels were normal. The results of systematic scoring support the efficiency and adequacy of installed filters. Considering the fact, that the persistence of Pb in soil is unlimited, temporarily subclinical or clinical poisoning of cattle may be expected. Annual scoring of health status of animals and Pb content in blood and Pb and Cd in hay is recommended. Only systematic and complete analytic work will confirm or reject a suspected Pb and Cd poisoning.
