Abstract		Dentists realize that treatment of dental caries cannot be limited to operative therapy. Modern clinical management of caries is aimed at eliminating the causes of the disease, not only its symptoms. The level of caries risk is determined by assessing the number, properties and progress of primary and secondary carious lesions. Direct and indirect risk factors for caries are identified. The quantity of saliva is assessed, its buffering capacity is determined and bacterial counts are performed. The results of diagnostic evaluation provide the basis for causal treatment. This comprises elimination of risk factors, intensive antimicrobial therapy and non-invasive preventive measures.
