Abstract     Background: The aim of our study was to evaluate and compare the in vitro efficacy of laser irradiation, chlorhexidine and calcium hydroxide against Enterococcus faecalis. Methods: Suspensions containing different bacterial concentrations were prepared from a 24-hour culture of E. faecalis. Following the addition of a photosensitizing agent, the suspensions were exposed to laser irradiation for 2 minutes. Bacterial growth was evaluated after incubation on blood agar for 24 hours at 37 degreesC. Unirradiated suspensions with added photosensitizer served as negative controls. A similar protocol was used for 0.5% chlorhexidine gluconate and calcium hydroxide paste. Results and conclusion: The in vitro efficacy of laser Irradiation on E. faecalis was comparable to that of 0.5% chlorhexidine gluconate. The photodynamic treatment resulted in complete inhibition of bacterial growth. Calcium hydroxide was less effective. The results suggest that photodynamic therapy might prove a useful method in the treatment of root canal infections. However, its efficacy should be evaluated in clinical studies.
