Abstract     Mechanically induced peripheral nerve lesions are amongst the commonest neurological disorders. While pressure neuropathies are caused by acute compression, entrapment neuropathies are caused by chronic constriction, repetitive smaller pressure, angulation and friction during movements through tight anatomic passages. The two types differ in their pathophysiological mechanisms, histological characteristics, prognosis and principles of treatment. The commonest pressure neuropathies (Saturday night palsy, peroneal nerve compression, etc.) and entrapment neuropathies (such as carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome and thoracic outlet syndrome) are described in some detail.
