Abstract     Beau's lines are transverse linear depressions in the nail plate, which appear at the base of the lunula weeks after a stressful event that has temporarily interrupted nail formation. In most cases accompanying signs of associated diseases are present. Beau's lines may be present in healthy newborn infants; they disappear in the next few months with growth of the healthy nail. They usually appear after severe infections or numerous other severe diseases. Some drugs, especially cytostatics, can cause nail changes, including Beau's lines. In treating patients with Beau's lines it is important to recognise the factor responsible for the temporary cessation of nail growth. There is no specific treatment for this condition. Successful treatment or removal of the causative factor enables subsequent healthy nail growth.
