Abstract     Rotaviruses are an important cause of acute gastroenteritis in humans and certain animal species. Reassortment of the rotavirus segmented genome is the main mechanism for significant changes in rotavirus molecular characteristics. The possible outcome is the emergence of new rotavirus genotypes, also of animal origin. Knowledge of the dinamics of rotavirus changes in nature is important especially from the standpoint of providing successful protection with the use of new rotavirus vaccines. For developing and updating an effective vaccine against rotavirus disease, it is of great importance to follow changes in rotavirus molecular characteristics in humans and animals.
